Maleic Anhydride (MA) is used as a raw material in the production of 1,4-butanediol (BDO),
γ-butyrolactone (GBL), tetrahydrofuran (THF), succinic acid, unsaturated polyester resins (UPR),
alkyd resins, etc. It is also applied in the pesticide industries.
Also known as maleic anhydride or cis-butenedioic anhydride, it is a fundamental unsaturated
organic acid anhydride feedstock. In pesticide manufacturing, maleic anhydride is used to synthesize
intermediates such as diethyl maleate (an intermediate for the organophosphorus insecticide Malathion),
1-phenyl-3,6-dihydroxypyridazine (an intermediate for Pyridaphenthion), and intermediates for pyrethroid insecticides like Tetramethrin, as well as for fungicides such as Captan. Additionally, it is widely used
in producing unsaturated polyester resins, printing ink additives, papermaking additives, coatings,
and in the food industries.
Maleic anhydride is primarily used to produce unsaturated polyester resins, alkyd resins, the pesticide
Malathion, highly effective and low-toxicity pesticides, and raw materials for long-acting sulfonamides.
It is also a key component in coatings, maleic rosin, polymaleic anhydride, and maleic anhydride-styrene copolymers. Furthermore, it serves as an organic chemical raw material for producing printing ink
additives, papermaking additives, plasticizers, tartaric acid, fumaric acid, and tetrahydrofuran.
In organic synthesis, maleic anhydride acts as an intermediate for synthetic fibers. It is also used as
a collector in metal ore flotation processes.
